Somali models are known for their elegance and flair and indeed Somalia has produced some elegant and beautiful models in the last few decades, from the ageless Iman to the Hijabi sensation Halima Aden.
Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on July 25, 1955.
Iman is regarded as the queen of the Somali models, she is one of the most sought-after fashion models of the 1970s and 1980s.
She is very successful with her own line of cosmetics. Iman was married to rock music legend David Bowie until his death in 2016. The couple has two children.
2. Yasmin Warsame
Warsame was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1976.
She moved with her family when she was fifteen years old from Somalia to Toronto, Canada. She holds Canadian citizenship.
She was discovered in 1997 by professional modelling agency scouts from SHOK Models in Toronto. She has been featured as the cover model of YYZ Living.
3. Fatima Siad
Fatima was born in 1986 in Mogadishu, Somalia to a Somali mother and an Ethiopian father, her parents divorced when she was still a child.
Fatima is regarded as one of the most beautiful Somali models, She is signed with New York Model Management in the US and German based Munich models.
She has appeared on the cover of Colures Magazine and also on the runway with several fashion designers like Hermes, she also featured on America’s Next Top Model cycle 10 where she finished third.
4. Waris Dirie
Waris was born in 1966, she was discovered by photographer Mike Goss who convinced her to model for him.
She has appeared on the Pirelli calender, and featured on many ads for top brands like Chanel, Revlon and Levi’s. Waris also landed a role on the James Bond movie The Living Daylights.
Apart from being a one of the most well known Somali models, Waris is an accomplished author, actress, and human rights activist in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
From the year 1997 to 2003, she served as a UN special ambassador against female genital mutilation.
In 2002 Waris started the Desert Flower Foundation.
5. Hawa Ahmed
Hawa was born in Somalia in 1989. Her family spent some years in Mombasa, Kenya, at the age of seven, she and her family moved to Sweden.
She is a winner of Sweden’s Next Top Model, Hawa who admires Iman and Waris Dirie is also a die-hard Yoga lover and currently lives in Sweden.
6. Halima Aden
Halima was born in 1997, she is an American citizen but was born in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
Halima made history for being the first woman to wear a hijab in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, where she was a semi-finalist.
The attention she got from the pagent gave her an opportunity to be signed with IMG models.
In 2019, Halima made history again when she become the first model to wear the hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.
She is the first hijab-wearing model to walk international runways and to be signed to a major modeling agency.
The model is also an ambassador for UNICEF focusing on childrens rights.
