The former president of the republic of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa is dead.
Mkapa’s death was announced by President John Magufuli on Friday, July 24.
According to President Magufuli, Mkapa died at an hospital in Dar es Salam where he was undergoing treatment.
Magufuli declared a seven day mourning period in the country.
African leaders including Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta and former prime minister Raila Odinga mourned Mkapa, praising him for his services for the continent.
Benjamin Mkapa served as Tanzania’s third president from 23 November 1995 to 21 December 2005.
Mkapa was hailed for his economic reforms in the East African nation and with former UN Secretary-General Koffi Annan played a key role bringing peace to Kenya after post-election violence in 2007/08.
